Abstract

The subject of this study is compilation and description of Nusaybin Kurds' death customs and rituals there is a gap in this area due to the limited number of academic studies on mourning and condolence customs and rituals in Kurdish culture. It is hoped that our study will be a small step in filling this gap. The aim of the study is to determine the changes and social functions of these customs and rituals and to find out the reasons for these changes. Accordingly, the social structure of the Kurds in Nusaybin region is also examined. In this context, aiming to identify the traces of the old Kurdish beliefs and rituals related to death the data obtained from the fieldwork were compared with the Kurdish culture. As a method, in the light of the written sources and data obtained in the fieldwork, the customs and rituals related to death are analyzed. As a result of analyzes, it has been seen that the changes in the social structure lead to changes in the customs and rituals related to death. In addition, although Islamic culture is dominant in the region, it has been observed that with some exceptions, Yazidi Kurds maintain their death customs against this religious dominant culture. Finally, it is observed that the death customs and rituals practiced by the Kurds in Nusaybin region were compatible with the general Kurdish culture.
