Mardin Lockdown Experience: Strategies for a More Tolerant Urban Development

الملخص

This chapter highlights the role of design, examining the degree to which two different places in Mardin, Turkey are able to deal with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and provide a 'tolerant' living environment for their inhabitants. It describes the modern, centrally planned parts of Mardin that were less able to provide the basic necessities of life and less conducive to self-sufficiency than the old city, which grew organically over centuries and feature an economic context of mutual aid and solidarity. It also talks about the historic parts of Mardin that sustained a healthier context, despite lacking many of the comforts of modern living and modern housing. The chapter compares the old city center's efficiency in dealing with the pandemic, compared with the ineffectiveness of more modern neighborhoods. It explores the features of cities that create more self-sufficient and tolerable living conditions in the COVID-19 era.
